Every now and then, we have puppies available to selected families for guardian homes. Please read carefully the information below before submitting an application.

What is a guardian home?

A puppy guardian home is a pet home for a dog that we feel has the potential to be a breeding dog in our program. Puppy will be carefully selected and will be pick of the litter, meaning you will have the best personality, colouring and best overall package with the puppy. Guardian homes need to be future than 60-80 minutes from our base.

How much does it cost to be a guardian home?

There is no adoption fee/charge for the puppy. The puppy will live with his/her host family and grow up as their family pet. The guardian is responsible for all general costs that they would with any pet in general, food, toys, routine vaccinations, insurance etc. Any health testing, breeding costs or pregnancy costs would be covered by us.

How does it work?

Within the first year, your puppy will have health tests and screening to determine whether or not he/she has sufficient health scores to become a breeding dog in our program. If he/she passes they will continue to live their life as the guardian’s pet , and will also be a breeding dog for ‘Devon Doodles’. Once your dog has retired, he/she will be transferred into your name and live out their life with their family.

How long does the guardian agreement last?

Our guardian girls may have a minimum of one litter or maximum of three litters. Females retire from breeding at approximately 4 years old. Males retire from stud services at 6 years old.

What happens when the dog is pregnant?

For each mating she will visit the breeder’s home so mating can take place. Gestation for a dog is approximately 9 weeks, the majority of this time will be spent with her family (guardians), most of the time, activity levels will be the same as when she wasn’t expecting puppies, and there are few restrictions. Approximately 6-8 days before she is due, she returns to the breeder’s home to have her puppies and stays until they are weaned at approximately 7 weeks.

May we visit the dog while she is with you?

Absolutely !!!!!

Your girl is still your family member, however, the first week we advise families to let her settle with her babies and get into the swing of being a new mummy.

The family are welcome to visit their dog while she is with her puppies.

Males won’t ever have to stay away from your home, they will visit the breeders for mating a few times a year.

What Happens when her/his breeding career ends?

Once the guardian agreement is fulfilled at approximately the age of 4yrs. He/she will spay her and turn over all ownership paperwork to the guardian family. In the case of a male at 6 years he will be neutered. They will then live out their years as a pet with your family

What happens if the dog fails their health testing?

If the guardian’s dog does not pass their health testing they will not be bred from. However, failing health testing does not mean the dog is not healthy, it just means they did not make a high enough scores to participate in our breeding program. The dog would then be spayed/neutered at correct age and turned over to the guardian family with no further obligation to us, so you will not loose the puppy you have fallen in love with.
